Milwaukee lead pipe replacement: programs and progress
Guidance updated · Historical address data unchanged
Milwaukee Water Works has replaced thousands of lead service lines across the city. That work deserves recognition—and means an old lead-line listing may no longer describe the pipe serving a property.
Start with the City’s current address record
Use the official service-line address checker to look up the City’s current record. Compare the utility-owned and customer-owned portions where those details are provided. An unknown material is not the same as a confirmed non-lead material.
Our address lookup provides historical context; it is not a current replacement register. If records disagree or you need a completion date, ask Milwaukee Water Works to confirm the work at that address.
How Milwaukee’s replacement programs work
The City describes required replacements, neighborhood prioritization, and owner-request options on its lead service-line replacement program overview. Use that page for current eligibility, participation steps, costs, and contact information. These terms can change, and a historical match here does not establish eligibility or a scheduled replacement.
For a property outside the City of Milwaukee, ask the water utility serving that property which programs and records apply.
Two portions of a service line
A water service line connects the water main to a building. Records may distinguish the public, utility-owned portion from the private, customer-owned portion. Work on one portion does not establish that the other was replaced.
When confirming work, ask which portions were replaced, the completion date for each, and the materials recorded afterward. A scheduled project or a non-lead material entry alone is not proof of a completed replacement event. See how to interpret service-line information.
Follow the City’s progress
The official replacement progress page is the best starting point for citywide totals and progress reports.
Program update — April 21, 2026: A City news release on 2026 construction reported more than 13,000 replacements as of that release and work underway in 23 prioritization zones. Those are dated citywide figures, not a current total or confirmation about any individual address.
While you confirm your property’s record
Review the City’s steps for reducing lead exposure and our guide to water testing and certified filters. A non-lead service-line record does not establish the lead level in tap water.
