About the data and this project
Guidance updated · Historical address data unchanged
Milwaukee Lead Pipes is an independent Hayforest Labs project. It makes historical address records searchable and connects residents with official current information. It is not operated by or affiliated with the City of Milwaukee or Milwaukee Water Works.
Where did the address list come from?
The original application imported a city list of addresses associated with lead service lines. The original site described that list as covering city-owned service lines. The database currently retains its original 92,525 address records; no newer inventory or completed-replacement records have been imported.
The exact source edition, effective date, and completeness of the original import have not yet been independently established. We do not present a page-update date as the age of the underlying records.
Geographic coverage
The search offers Milwaukee, Greenfield, Shorewood, St. Francis, Wauwatosa, and West Milwaukee. Those search options are not proof of comprehensive coverage within each municipality. Confirm records and replacement-program eligibility with the water utility serving the property.
What has changed—and what has not?
Guidance and site wording were updated on . The historical address records were preserved. Matches now explain the historical city-owned listing, while no-match results explain what absence from the covered list means.
We do not fill results with generic unknown-material or missing-date fields. Sourced replacement details will appear only when an actual reviewed record is available for that address. See understanding your results.
Why not just replace this list with the current map?
A material inventory and a completed-replacement register are different datasets. In our October 2026 review, the public city inventory’s structured replacement-status and completion-date fields were empty. Its public map alone did not provide a verified list of all completed replacements, and its reuse terms need clarification before republishing its data.
We are seeking a dated, reusable inventory and address-level completion records. Until those are available, the official City checker is the place to consult current city records. Do not interpret a citywide progress total as confirmation of work at a particular address.
Sources, corrections, and publisher
For current pipe records or a discrepancy in the City’s record, contact Milwaukee Water Works through its official lead-pipes resources. For this independent website, visit the publisher, Hayforest Labs.
Our replacement guide and testing and filters guide link directly to official sources. New records must distinguish planned from completed work and identify which portion of the line the source describes.
